Teacher of the Month July 2021

1. Your Name

Sabra Prentice

2. Where do you teach?

ESF Beacon Hill School, ESF Kowloon Junior School, ESF Renaissance College, ESF Sha Tin Junior School, ESF Kennedy School, ESF Hillside International Kindergarten, ESF Tsing Yi International Kindergarten and ESF Tung Chung International Kindergarten. Over the past 16 years, I have taught at most of our sites!

3. What level of class do you teach?

Kindergarten predominantly but also Primary and Secondary.

4. Tell us an unusual fact about yourself?

I started doing my teaching degree at university, many, many years ago but then switched majors. I only came back to teaching later on in my life!

5. Tell us a fact about yourself that not many people know?

Reading - I always have a book with me! That's how I relax.

6. Do you have any unusual talents?

Probably not very unusual but I do speak Italian fluently.

7. Why do you enjoy teaching at ESF Language & Learning?

I love that I have had the opportunity to teach a variety of classes and ages all over Hong Kong. The best part, is of course, the children & families I have gotten to know. There is something truly special about teaching a child and then having them bring their younger sibling to be in my class a few years later.

8. Share a funny story that has happened in your classroom or at school.

I have very curly hair and one of my students drew a picture of me with these wild, green scribbles around my head. Then she said very proudly, "Ms Sabra, this is you. Your hair is like broccoli." I was very impressed with her delightful observation and her full sentence!

9. Anything that you would like to share with us?

After 16 years with ESF Language & Learning, and 28 years in Hong Kong, this is my last term in the job as I will be going back to New Zealand in September. So if you are reading this, I would like to thank you for making my time at ESF Language & Learning truly memorable!

10. From all your years at ESF Language, what are some of your outstanding memories?

So many memories! Summer camps and typhoons, the Star Wars Rap, birthday lunches, bosses who came and left, new & improved offices, CPD days with disco dough, and of course, the amazing people I get to work with!

11. What qualities make a good teacher?

A sense of humor, knowing when to listen, giving students time to talk, making lessons fun, being flexible & adaptable, and lots of patience!
